It is an aspect of the film that came as a surprise, but it was also great to see this aspect of history shown without remorse.As a lifelong fan of this franchise I am admittedly biased. In fact, the appearance of a company of French colonisers makes them more of the central antagonists of the film. In many ways, both Naru and the Predator aren’t exactly opposing forces, rather they share the common goal of being the best hunter. It is a level playing field somewhat, with the audience never really sure of what Naru or Predator are truly capable of.
While it still does have the Predator’s signature cloaking abilities, this version of the monster has primitive weapons just like its opponent.
Through numerous teases of the Predator’s capabilities, viewers can see that this is not the same highly advanced alien that we’ve seen in prior films. Amber Midthunder provides the right balance in portraying Naru, with Dakota Beavers’ performance as Taebe equally standing out.įrom the get-go, Prey doesn’t shy away from the fact that it is a Predator movie through and through, with the hulking brute making its on-screen appearance early on in Prey’s opening sequence. Throughout the film, Naru is portrayed as not just tough, but also quick-witted and highly resourceful.Ĭompared to Arnold Schwarzenegger's original macho commando, Naru is a breath of fresh air when it comes to action heroes. Naru herself is a well-rounded character, she is equally capable in hunting as her brother, but is held up by her own lack of self-confidence. While her brother Taabe and her mother discourage this dangerous trial for Naru, she nonetheless desperately wants to prove her worth and earn her place in the world. The main protagonist Naru is a hunter and healer who wishes to prove herself to her tribe by hunting and bringing home a trophy. It is a refreshing portrayal of Native Americans, especially in such a crucial moment in history.

So what makes Prey so great compared to any other sequel to Predator? Let’s take a look. It is also a remarkable, standalone film that needs no prior knowledge of the Predator films to enjoy. Taking place in 1719 and centering around a young Native American warrior of the Comanche Nation, Prey takes the franchise’s core concepts and threads new ground. The latest entry, 2022’s Prey, is a film that revitalises the very idea of the Predator in a whole new way. As much as it is an iconic and landmark action film franchise, the Predator film output is a lot more conservative than its Alien counterpart, as there are only five Predator films.
